Why beetroot

A red color system that does not behave like anthocyanin

Beetroot color is driven by betalains rather than anthocyanins. This distinction matters in cold dairy, ice cream and selected near-neutral formulations where many anthocyanin reds can shift toward purple or blue.

Beetroot is not a universal high-heat red. Its commercial value comes from using the right grade in the right process: low-temperature color, whole-food positioning, instant dispersion or standardized nutrition formulation.

Clean-label color directionNatural red to pink shades for cold beverages, dairy, frozen desserts and selected confectionery.
Flexible ingredient identityChoose whole-root food powder, juice powder, standardized color or nutrition-focused extract.
Batch-first formulationColor value, nitrate content, carrier ratio and sensory profile can be confirmed by TDS, COA and sample testing.

Grade selection

Choose the grade by function, not by product name alone

The five grades solve different buyer problems. Use this first-pass guide, then confirm the final specification against your matrix and process.

Organic whole-root beetroot powder
Whole-food grade

Organic Whole-Root Powder

Cleaned beet roots are sliced, low-temperature dehydrated and micro-ground. Retains natural plant fiber and the broader root matrix.

  • Reference moisture: <= 7-10%
  • Best for dry blends, superfood powders and capsules
  • Not fully clear in water
  • Heat can reduce both color and native nitrate retention
Fully water-soluble beetroot juice powder and clear red beverage
Instant grade

Juice Powder

Pressed juice is filtered, vacuum-concentrated and spray-dried with a carrier. Designed for fast dissolution and clearer beverage systems.

  • Fully water-soluble reference
  • Typical carrier reference: maltodextrin 15-30%
  • Suitable for solid drinks and tableting concepts
  • Confirm mesh and carrier ratio by current TDS
Beet red beverage and chilled application products
Color-value grade

Standardized Beet Red E5-E200

Beet juice concentrate or aqueous extract standardized to a target color value for predictable coloring cost and shade strength.

  • Reference pH range: 3.0-7.0
  • Fully water-soluble formats available
  • Betanin reference CAS: 7659-95-2
  • Best for cold-filled and low-temperature systems
Freeze-dried beetroot powder with porous beet slices
Premium low-temperature grade

Freeze-Dried Powder

Cleaned beetroot is sliced, freeze-dried and milled to support a brighter color and stronger whole-food positioning.

  • Reference moisture: <= 5%
  • Premium smoothies, meal replacements and retail superfoods
  • Low-temperature process supports color retention
  • Organic status and batch color require confirmation
Beetroot powder sports nutrition formulation concept
Nutrition formulation grade

Approx. 2% Nitrate Extract

Aqueous extraction, purification and standardization create a red powder for nutrition formulations where nitrate content is an explicit specification.

  • Reference concentration: approximately 2%
  • Reference extract ratio: 4:1-20:1
  • Fully water-soluble reference
  • Serving level and destination-market review are mandatory
Food ingredient laboratory quality inspection of beetroot powder
Custom supply

Custom Color & Packaging

Color value, carrier system, mesh, organic status, nitrate target and packaging can be aligned with the project where manufacturing feasibility allows.

  • Typical MOQ starts from 1 kg
  • Bulk drums and light-barrier foil bags
  • Small retail pouches and sachets available
  • Final scope is quotation- and batch-dependent

Specification framework for buyer qualification

Use the table to shortlist a grade. Final purchase specifications must come from the current TDS, COA and approved sample.

Main constraint Earthy flavor; incomplete clarity Carrier ratio affects label and dosage Heat, light and oxygen sensitive Higher cost; natural batch variation Serving-level, nitrite/nitrosamine and market compliance review
Identity note: CAS 7659-95-2 is a betanin reference and should not be presented as the CAS of every whole-root or juice-powder grade. Confirm the commercial identity and ingredient declaration for each SKU.

Formulation window

Strong visual impact, narrow heat window

Beet betalains can deliver a vivid red or pink direction without the typical anthocyanin blue shift, but they are sensitive to prolonged heat, light and oxygen.

Quality and supply

Qualify the exact grade before scale-up

Natural color performance is batch- and matrix-dependent. AMULYN supports qualification through sample testing, technical document review and batch COA alignment.

Buyer FAQ

Questions to settle before ordering

Which beetroot grade should I choose?

Choose whole-root powder for whole-food dry mixes, juice powder for instant drinks, E-value beet red for controlled coloring, freeze-dried powder for premium superfood positioning, and nitrate-standardized extract only where serving-level and market compliance are established.

Can beet red survive UHT, hot filling or baking?

It is not the preferred choice for prolonged high heat. The source data notes visible fading or browning during extended processing above 60 C. Use it primarily in cold-filled, refrigerated, frozen or low-temperature products and run a real-matrix trial.

Why does beet red work in some near-neutral products?

Betalains do not follow the same red-to-blue transition as anthocyanin colors. This can preserve a red or pink direction in selected cold-process near-neutral products, although overall stability still depends on pH, heat, light, oxygen and the full formulation.

Is the juice powder carrier-free?

Not necessarily. The source manufacturing reference uses approximately 15-30% maltodextrin for spray drying. Request the current TDS and ingredient statement because carrier ratio can vary by grade.

Can the 2% nitrate extract be used in daily supplements?

Serving level, total dietary nitrate exposure, nitrite/nitrosamine testing, target consumer and destination-market rules must be reviewed by the finished-product manufacturer. This page does not establish a dosage or long-term-use claim.

Do you provide an FDA certificate?

FDA does not issue a general product certificate for natural colors. Market access depends on the product identity, manufacturing route, intended use and applicable regulation. Request the grade-specific regulatory and quality documentation instead of relying on a generic "FDA approved" claim.
